"You want solar energy?  I'll give you solar energy.

"I'll give you a plant that will grow 30 feet out of the earth in one summer.

"Big fields of it.

"Now that's solar fucking energy!"

"I hate this place.  You know that.  You hate this place too.  With good reason.  But I'm not going to keep sitting here the rest of my life hating it in silence while giving it my consent and the fruits of my labor.

"I'm going to be a man and try to change it.  Make it Human and Good, by Awakening what is Human and Good in my fellow man.  And if all my efforts amount to nothing more than waving my hands and jumping up and down and yelling to the sidewalks and the dogs my call for REVOLUTION, then I will have served my Purpose as Village Idiot quite admirably."

How long until the Chinese bail out the USA?  What will we have to give them in return?  What if they choose a different path?

What would happen if people just stopped buying corporate stuff?  Just produce what they need and buy and sell at the local market with the other people in their community?

What this is all about is the very nature of society.  Go back to first principles.  Why did Man gather into communities?

To bag bigger game.
For protection in a violent world.
To steal another man's kill.

We need Labor-Saving devices.  Labor needs to be saved from Capital.  haha

Isn't it a simple truth that depending on people far away for your basic needs is stupid?  What will you do if you can't buy food in the supermarket?

What does your Perfect Society offer for the Average Man?  Is inclusion in your Master Race determined by finances?

"Yeah, like they're gonna let OUR kids compete on a level genetic playing field with THEIR kids.  You believe that?"

He laughed.

"Designer babies will always be beyond our means, man.  No discrimination needed.  Set the price, set the access."

12/3 Desk

I told Michael I thought we should get the guys together.  He grinned while playing and nodded.  He's been waiting for it for a long time.  I hear the anger in his riffs when people talk about politics in the lounge.  Later he sat next to me at the bar and rolled a couple cigarettes.  "You know you can use this place," he said while fiddling with a cig.  I asked him what the fuck he meant.  "The first American Revolution sprang from taverns.  That's where the ideas percolated.  That's where the ideology and the will formed.  You run a tavern here in a city with major university founded by one of those Revolutionaries."  He pointed the fag at me.  "It's about fucking time you woke up."

I looked down.  I knew what he meant.  Long Ago, we wanted to Change the World.  Twenty years later, the world is sure changed, but we had nothing to do with it.

Or I had nothing to do with it.  I still find it hard to believe that Edward and Harrison, Darren and Jack, George and Bella are happy with the changes.  The guys -- the things we talked about all those days and nights.  George always encouraged us so much in our thinking.  He prodded us to take things farther, follow them deeper, develop or most radical ideas to their logical fullness.  He wasn't doing that so we would further the creation of this present Monstrosity, was he?

He wasn't doing it so I could manage a mediocre fucking restaurant in a mediocre fucking hotel in a pinprick town on the fucking map.

The voice spoke to me again.  It's such a deep, powerful voice.  It rumbles up from the depthless well of my soul, louder and deeper and gruffer and more commanding than ever my father's voice .

"Create your vision."

"Create your vision."

My vision.  I knew instantly what it was talking about, even though I hadn't thought about that in decades and never really thought of it as "my vision."  It was just some ideas I used to have when I was a kid.  I put a little research into them at UVA.  I tried at Oxton, but their reaction was swift and terrible.  George encouraged me.  But that was it, just some ideas and fancies of a naive idealism married to a cynical fatalism.

"Create your vision."  It was a powerful command from a presence in my brain that demanded obedience, and yet was full of love.  I saw myself kneeling before the shadow and answering in my most manly voice, "I will serve.  I will do as you command.  You I serve."

Ten years ago things like that freaked me out.  Now I know I'm insane, so it doesn't faze me.  I will do it.  I will follow this voice and see where it leads.

I want to see my son.

Pharmakon, Inc. announced today that its Lifesaver Health Regulator Chip is ready for market.

Prance Polling today released results of its latest "ID chip" survey.  When asked if id chips should be mandatory for all school-age children to enable the recovery of lost or kidnapped children, 76% of those polled responded "Yes."

Not my children.  Not their grandchildren.  I know Pharmakon.  My father and his club have an effective controlling stake.  Bill Henson is on the board.

I can't sit here forever feeling sorry for myself.  Failure or not, wastrel or not, "disgrace to the Duffy genes" or not, I cannot just sit here and let this happen.  I do have a conscience, though there be no visible evidence of it.

I wonder what the guys are doing.  It's been so long since we all hung out.  If only Darren had come to the twenty-year.  I was an idiot and stayed away from the ten-year.  The rest of them were there.  I haven't seen most of them since they left UVA.  Only Michael keeps in touch.  Ha, he practically lives in the restaurant, still silently playing his guitar for any who will listen, and still making more every day than I do.  Never played a gig, never been in a band, never done anything but play on sidewalks and wherever a cafe owner lets him, and the guy's probably the richest musician in town.  It still amazes me.  I'll talk to Michael.

12/2 Breakfast Table

Emergent technologies will allow for direct external control over the body and mind from a remote location.

All of the necessary technologies are being researched and developed.  Many exist already.  Transceivers are minuscule and easily inserted into medical appliances, or "ID chips".  Radio waves and other invisible rays/beams/whatnot can be directed at a desired organ.  As researchers map the brain and the genetic code, and more and more of the body's processes are deciphered, more and more of a human will be subject to direct control.  At that point, the person who controls the transmissions controls the human, and any concept of individual liberty is dead.  Whether the controller is from a private corporation, or from a government internal security agency, the individual is deprived of all rights, indeed of his identity, and subject to the absolute tyranny of the controller.

We must never allow this to happen, or we will forever surrender the status of Free Men.
